Small Niche Streaming Services Defy Expectations, Thrive Despite Growing Competition

The streaming landscape in the United States is increasingly crowded and costly, yet niche services, also known as Specialty SVODs, are experiencing robust growth, defying predictions of market saturation. These small streaming services cater to a very specific interests and are often lesser known.

A recent report by Antenna reveals that the Specialty SVOD category, which caters to specific audiences or genres, has outpaced even premium streaming services in growth, albeit from a smaller base.

Several factors are contributing to this trend. Cord cutting continues to increase, with viewers seeking more diverse content options beyond the mass appeal offerings of major platforms. Additionally, platforms like Amazon Channels, with the emphasis on individual shows over specific services, are boosting discoverability for smaller players.

This push has led to small services dedicated to everything from anime to cooking seeing strong growth as people use services like Amazon Prime Channels to manage their subscriptions.

Key insights from the report include:

  • Amazon Channels’ Success: Over half of Amazon Channels users have subscribed to a Specialty SVOD service, likely due to its user interface that promotes sampling across various services.
  • Curious Customers: Most Specialty SVOD subscribers are “Curious Customers” rather than “Committed” customers, suggesting bundling strategies could boost long-term loyalty.
  • Bundling Potential: While some bundling exists among Specialty SVODs, its impact remains limited. Significant potential exists to unlock further value through bundled offerings.
  • Steady Growth: The share of total SVOD consumers who have engaged with Specialty SVODs is consistently increasing, indicating growing interest in niche content.

This trend suggests that even in a saturated market, there’s room for specialized streaming services to thrive. As major platforms focus on mass appeal, Specialty SVODs can fill gaps by catering to specific interests and underserved audiences.

However, the challenge for these niche services lies in converting curious customers into committed customers. Bundling and other strategies to enhance loyalty will be crucial for long-term success in this increasingly competitive landscape.
