Amazon Web Services Taps Former SAP, Microsoft Exec Julia White as CMO

Amazon Web Services (AWS) named former SAP chief marketing and solutions officer Julia White as its new chief marketing officer (CMO).

White will succeed Raejeanne Skillern, who is leaving to devote more time to her family and her board member roles.

White left SAP in August after three-and-a-half years with the company. Prior to that, she spent nearly 20 years at Microsoft, rising to corporate vp for its Azure cloud computing division.

All change for AWS

AWS has seen significant turnover in its executive ranks in recent months.

CEO Adam Selipsky left in May, followed by vp of artificial intelligence Matt Wood in October.

Two additions to AWS in May were former Amazon advertising executive Colleen Aubrey as senior vp of AWS Solutions and former Google Cloud vp Baskar Sridharan as vp of AI/machine learning services and infrastructure.

Amazon CEO, Andy Jassy, said during the company’s third-quarter earnings call that AWS posted $27.5 billion in revenue for the period, up 19.1% from $23 billion in the third quarter of 2023, with the unit’s profits rising 49.7% year over year, to $10.4 billion from $7 billion.

Synergy Research Group said earlier this month that AWS held a 31% share of the global cloud services market, followed by Microsoft at 22% and Google at 13%.

Amazon is accelerating its generative AI efforts to maintain that lead.

AWS CEO Matt Garman wrote in a memo to employees, obtained by Business Insider, “With a strong background in marketing, Julia brings extensive experience in cloud, AI, and product messaging and positioning, most recently as CMO and executive board member at SAP. While there, she led critical areas like product and industry marketing, solution management, digital and brand marketing, regional marketing, industry solutions, and value engineering.”

The Streaming Wars is intentionally ad-free

We don’t run display ads. Not because we can’t, but because we don’t believe in them.

They interrupt the reading experience. They cheapen the work. And they burn advertisers’ money on impressions nobody actually wants.

So we chose a different model.

We say the things people in this industry are already thinking but don’t say out loud. We connect the dots beyond the headline and focus on explaining why things matter to the people working in this business.

If you believe industry coverage can exist without clutter and interruption, you can support it here → SUPPORT TSW.

Support is optional. But it directly funds research and continued coverage — and helps prove this model can work.
