Crunchyroll, the subscription streaming service owned by Sony that specializes in Japanese anime content, Jan. 6 announced a launch of a new app — Crunchyroll Manga — later this year.
The new app will launch later as a standalone app on iOS and Android devices, debuting in the U.S. and Canada. Designed to complement Crunchyroll subscription memberships, the app will be offered as a premium add-on, with web browser integration also planned for the future.
Offering a vast array of stories across diverse genres, the app will feature both iconic titles and current fan favorites. Manga on Crunchyroll Manga will debut in English with the goal of increasing language options as the app expands similarly to Crunchyroll’s streaming service.
“As we strengthen partnerships in this exciting new venture, we aim to add even more value to the Crunchyroll membership, complementing our vast anime library, Crunchyroll Game Vault, and extensive selection of products in the Crunchyroll Store,” Rahul Purini, president of Crunchyroll, said in a statement.
Purini contends that nearly 70% of anime fans read digital manga at least once a month.
“The app will not only meet this growing interest but also fuel the continued global popularity of anime and manga alike,” Rahul said.
Separately, Crunchyroll together with Aniplex, Sony Music, and PlayStation Productions, announced a new anime series adapted from Sucker Punch Productions “Ghost of Tsushima” video game, and its cooperative multiplayer experience inspired by Japanese folktales and mythology.
The Ghost of Tsushima anime will be produced in collaboration with Aniplex, the studio behind series such as “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Solo Leveling,” and “Sword Art Online”.
The adaptation will be helmed by director Takanobu Mizuno, with Gen Urobuchi for Story Composition and animation by Kamikazi Douga. Together, the team will bring traditional samurai aesthetics to life with cinematic storytelling and striking visuals. Sony Music will serve as the strategic music and soundtrack partner for the series.
“This project is a testament to the creative synergy within the Sony family, uniting the expertise of PlayStation Studios and PlayStation Productions…will offer fans an exciting new way to experience the game in an anime style that will be bold and groundbreaking,” said Purini.
The series will premiere exclusively on Crunchyroll in 2027.

The Streaming Wars is intentionally ad-free
We don’t run display ads. Not because we can’t, but because we don’t believe in them.
They interrupt the reading experience. They cheapen the work. And they burn advertisers’ money on impressions nobody actually wants.
So we chose a different model.
We say the things people in this industry are already thinking but don’t say out loud. We connect the dots beyond the headline and focus on explaining why things matter to the people working in this business.
If you believe industry coverage can exist without clutter and interruption, you can support it here → SUPPORT TSW.
Support is optional. But it directly funds research and continued coverage — and helps prove this model can work.
