DAZN inks global streaming deal with NHL

St. Louis Blues defenseman Philip Broberg (6) skates into Winnipeg Jets

Sports streaming service DAZN is making a play for the global hockey audience.

According to a report by Mollie Cahillane in Sports Business Journal, DAZN has reached a deal with the NHL to be the global home of NHL.tv, the service that grants international fans access to all of the league’s games. The service will be available as a standalone subscription or add-on package in almost 200 countries, not including the United States, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Norway, or Sweden — countries which already have active NHL media deals.

DAZN has inked similar global streaming deals for American sports leagues in the past. The streamer is currently the home of NFL Game Pass, which allows international viewers to access NFL broadcasts, and PGA Tour Pass, which provides similar access to the international audience.

Per SBJ, certain live games will be blacked out in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Those games will be available on demand when the game is over.

While DAZN has not generally focused on hockey, the streamer has held broadcast rights for Austria’s pro league and the KHL in Russia.

The streaming service continues to consolidate live sports rights globally, having recently concluded its global presentation of the FIFA Club World Cup.

The Streaming Wars is intentionally ad-free

We don’t run display ads. Not because we can’t, but because we don’t believe in them.

They interrupt the reading experience. They cheapen the work. And they burn advertisers’ money on impressions nobody actually wants.

So we chose a different model.

We say the things people in this industry are already thinking but don’t say out loud. We connect the dots beyond the headline and focus on explaining why things matter to the people working in this business.

If you believe industry coverage can exist without clutter and interruption, you can support it here → SUPPORT TSW.

Support is optional. But it directly funds research and continued coverage — and helps prove this model can work.
