Parler Cloud Technologies on Monday announced it had completed its acquisition of Edgio’s content delivery network (CDN) business, called EdgeCast.

As part of the acquisition, around 120 Edgio employees are expected to join Parler, the technology company that grew out of the right-of-center social media platform launched in 2018. Parler emerged as the winning bidder of Edgio’s bankruptcy auction for assets related to its EdgeCast CDN business; late last year, rival streaming technology platform Akamai said it acquired some Edgio customer contracts and intellectual property through the same process.

EdgeCast scored a major victory over the weekend as the technology platform that powered Tubi’s free streaming of Super Bowl LIX, which delivered the National Football League (NFL) championship game in ultra high-definition (UHD/4K) from Fox’s national programming feed. According to technology analysis firm Phenix, Tubi had the lowest Super Bowl delay between on-field action and the time it was presented to streamers; Tubi and the Fox network are both owned by Fox Corporation.

Parler says the acquisition of EdgeCast complements a number of its other services, including Parler Social, Play TV, digital payments platform Parler Pay and e-commerce platform Parler Shop. Parler says its services are geared toward the creator economy, including those who have been shut out of more-traditional social media and technology-based platforms.

“The surge in high-quality online video content is creating significant network capacity constraints and undermining traditional revenue models,” Anneliese Roley, the Chief Financial Officer at Parler Cloud Technologies, said in a statement. “To offset these pressures and enhance margin expansion, service providers are aggressively moving into the CDN market, optimizing cost structures while capturing new monetization opportunities in an increasingly data-intensive landscape.”

Parler says EdgeCast has already been integrated into the Triton DataCenter, which utilizes the SmartOS operating system for public-facing container hosting.

“By integrating EgdeCast with Triton DataCenter, we are not only scaling Parler Social, Play TV, and Parler Pay, but also offering high-performance enterprise cloud hosting that prioritizes speed, security, and freedom from Big Tech constraints,” Nick Wilkens, the Chief Infrastructure Officer at Parler, said on Monday.

Through its acquisition of EdgeCast, Parler says its data centers have grown from five in North America to 25 in seven countries.
