South Park to Leave HBO Max Tomorrow, Becoming a Global Exclusive on Paramount+

In a major change for one of television’s most iconic animated series, South Park will officially depart HBO Max on August 5, 2025, with its streaming rights transitioning to Paramount+ as a global exclusive. The move marks the end of a five-year run on Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming platform, where the entire 26-season library of the irreverent comedy has been available, excluding the current 27th season, which premiered last week.

HBO Max recently added a notice on its South Park page, alerting viewers that the series will no longer be available after August 5. Starting next week, fans looking to stream the adventures of Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny will need a Paramount+ subscription, as the Paramount-owned platform secures exclusive global streaming rights to the show. This transition aligns with Paramount+’s ongoing efforts to bolster its content library and capitalize on the cultural juggernaut that South Park has been since its debut in 1997.

Created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, South Park has remained a pop culture staple for nearly three decades, known for its biting satire, crude humor, and fearless commentary on social and political issues. The show’s move to Paramount+ follows a landmark deal in 2021, when Parker and Stone signed a $900 million agreement with ViacomCBS (now Paramount Global) to produce new seasons and a series of South Park made-for-streaming movies exclusively for Paramount+. This deal solidified the platform’s long-term investment in the franchise, which has already delivered several streaming specials, including South Park: Post COVID and South Park: The Streaming Wars.

The shift to Paramount+ is expected to give fans access to the full South Park catalog, including the newly debuted 27th season, alongside the streaming-exclusive movies. Paramount+ has been aggressively expanding its content offerings to compete in the crowded streaming market, and securing South Park as a global exclusive is a major coup. The platform already hosts other high-profile properties like Star Trek, Yellowstone, and SpongeBob SquarePants, and South Park’s addition strengthens its appeal to a broad audience.

The departure from HBO Max reflects the ongoing realignment of content in the streaming wars, as studios prioritize their own platforms for flagship properties. For HBO Max, losing South Park is a blow, but the service continues to offer a robust lineup, including House of the Dragon, The White Lotus, and DC Universe titles. Meanwhile, Paramount+ is betting on South Park’s enduring popularity to drive subscriptions and engagement.

Fans have until August 5 to binge South Park on HBO Max before it becomes a Paramount+ exclusive. The move underscores the dynamic nature of streaming rights and the growing importance of exclusive content in attracting and retaining subscribers in an increasingly competitive market.

The Streaming Wars is intentionally ad-free

We don’t run display ads. Not because we can’t, but because we don’t believe in them.

They interrupt the reading experience. They cheapen the work. And they burn advertisers’ money on impressions nobody actually wants.

So we chose a different model.

We say the things people in this industry are already thinking but don’t say out loud. We connect the dots beyond the headline and focus on explaining why things matter to the people working in this business.

If you believe industry coverage can exist without clutter and interruption, you can support it here → SUPPORT TSW.

Support is optional. But it directly funds research and continued coverage — and helps prove this model can work.
