Warner Bros. Discovery has formed a joint venture to license its catalog of movie and TV show music in a deal reportedly worth $1 billion.
The media giant inked an agreement with U.K.-based Cutting Edge Group, keeping creative and operational control of the rights, with CEG, DWS Group, among others, having a management seat at the table.
While the strategy mirrors recent mega-million dollar deals music artists cashing in on their catalogs, WBD is generating significant incremental revenue while retaining ownership and creative control.
WBD TV music rights includes “Friends,” HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” “The Big Bang Theory,” “Two and Half Men,” “Succession,” “The West Wing,” “ER,” “Full House,” “Sex and The City” and “Gossip Girl,” and “The White Lotus,” while movie rights include Rebel Without a Cause, The Exorcist, A Star is Born, Blade Runner, and Shawshank Redemption, among others.

The Streaming Wars is intentionally ad-free
We don’t run display ads. Not because we can’t, but because we don’t believe in them.
They interrupt the reading experience. They cheapen the work. And they burn advertisers’ money on impressions nobody actually wants.
So we chose a different model.
We say the things people in this industry are already thinking but don’t say out loud. We connect the dots beyond the headline and focus on explaining why things matter to the people working in this business.
If you believe industry coverage can exist without clutter and interruption, you can support it here → SUPPORT TSW.
Support is optional. But it directly funds research and continued coverage — and helps prove this model can work.
