Netflix’s Latest Report Highlights Top Shows, Films, and Global Viewing Trends

Netflix has released its latest Engagement Report, showcasing viewership trends from July to December 2024. This bi-annual report, which Netflix now publishes alongside its second and fourth-quarter earnings, offers a comprehensive look at what subscribers watched during the latter half of the year.

Netflix reported a total of 94 billion hours watched, reflecting a 5% year-over-year increase. The data reaffirms Netflix’s strategy of investing in diverse content across genres and languages to maximize engagement and subscriber retention.

Most-Watched Shows: Squid Game Season 2 Leads the Pack

Despite premiering just six days before the end of the year, Squid Game Season 2 dominated as the most-watched series, garnering 87 million views. The report also highlights the following top-performing series:

  1. Squid Game Season 2 – 87 million views
  2. The Perfect Couple Season 1 – 75 million views
  3. Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story – 70 million views
  4. Emily in Paris Season 4 – 58 million views
  5. Nobody Wants This Season 1 – 57 million views

Most-Watched Films: Carry-On Tops the Charts

  2. The Union – 131 million views
  3. Rebel Ridge – 129 million views
  4. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F – 97 million views
  5. Our Little Secret – 81 million views

Genre Trends: Animated Films and True Crime Stay Popular

Animated films continue to captivate audiences, with 10 of the top 25 films in the latter half of the year falling into this category. Notable animated titles include:

  • Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch – 67 million views
  • Sing Thriller – 77 million views
  • Trolls Band Together – 61 million views
  • That Christmas – 60 million views
  • Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie – 56 million views

True crime also maintained its strong appeal, with The Menendez Brothers (39 million views) and American Murder: Laci Peterson (37 million views) ranking among the most-watched documentaries.

International Success: Non-English Titles Gain Traction

Nearly one-third of Netflix’s total viewership came from non-English shows and films. Popular international hits include:

  • La Palma (Norway) – 52 million views
  • The Accident (Mexico) – 41 million views
  • Family Pack (France) – 41 million views
  • The Empress Season 2 (Germany) – 19 million views
  • Senna (Brazil) – 15 million views
  • One Hundred Years of Solitude (Colombia) – 9 million views

Regional Highlights: South Korea, Japan, and India

Netflix’s investments in South Korean, Japanese, and Indian content continued to drive strong engagement:

  • Japan: Tokyo Swindlers (12M), Drawing Closer (8M), Jujutsu Kaisen (8M)
  • South Korea: Officer Black Belt (40M), Mission: Cross (23M), Love Next Door (20M), Culinary Class Wars (17M)
  • India: Maharaja (25M), Do Patti (20M), IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack (12M)

A Diverse Viewing Landscape

Netflix emphasized that no single title accounted for more than 1% of total viewing, underscoring the diverse consumption patterns among its subscribers. Squid Game Season 2, despite being the biggest title, represented just 0.7% of all hours watched on the platform.

With viewership on the rise, Netflix remains committed to expanding its content library, investing in local productions, and ensuring a wide range of genres and formats to cater to its global audience.

The Streaming Wars is intentionally ad-free

We don’t run display ads. Not because we can’t, but because we don’t believe in them.

They interrupt the reading experience. They cheapen the work. And they burn advertisers’ money on impressions nobody actually wants.

So we chose a different model.

We say the things people in this industry are already thinking but don’t say out loud. We connect the dots beyond the headline and focus on explaining why things matter to the people working in this business.

If you believe industry coverage can exist without clutter and interruption, you can support it here → SUPPORT TSW.

Support is optional. But it directly funds research and continued coverage — and helps prove this model can work.
