Prime Video’s X-Ray Recaps: AI-Powered Summaries Keep Viewers in the Loop Without Spoilers

On Monday, Amazon unveiled X-Ray Recaps, highlighting the generative AI-powered tool as a “new way to stay updated without wasting time or encountering spoilers.” This feature delivers concise, easily digestible summaries for entire seasons, individual episodes, or even specific scenes, pinpointing details down to the exact minute a user is watching.

At launch, X-Ray Recaps will be available for Amazon MGM Studios’ original series, including popular titles like “The Boys,” “Upload,” “Daisy Jones & The Six,” “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” and “The Wheel of Time.” Currently in beta, the feature is accessible on Amazon’s Fire TV devices in the United States, with plans to expand to additional devices by year’s end.

Designed to avoid spoilers, X-Ray Recaps summarize content only up to the point where viewers last stopped watching. This ensures that key plot developments remain undisclosed until viewers are ready.

Adam Gray, Prime Video’s VP of product, emphasized how the feature addresses a common streaming challenge: forgetting where one left off. He stated, “With this context-aware functionality, Prime Video will provide summaries of key moments and plot developments, helping viewers quickly refresh their memory, jump back into the action, or rediscover why they fell in love with a series.”

X-Ray Recaps are powered by Amazon Bedrock, a generative AI service on AWS, which enables scalable application development using foundational models. A combination of Bedrock and custom AI models built with Amazon SageMaker allows the system to analyze video segments, subtitles, and dialogue, generating comprehensive descriptions of significant events, locations, and conversations.

Users can access X-Ray Recaps on compatible devices either from the Prime Video details page or while watching content. Options include viewing summaries for the current episode, the season up to their last watched point, or earlier seasons.

X-Ray Recaps add to Prime Video’s suite of X-Ray features, which provide viewers with insights into their favorite shows and movies, including trivia, cast information, soundtrack details, and more.

The Streaming Wars is intentionally ad-free

We don’t run display ads. Not because we can’t, but because we don’t believe in them.

They interrupt the reading experience. They cheapen the work. And they burn advertisers’ money on impressions nobody actually wants.

So we chose a different model.

We say the things people in this industry are already thinking but don’t say out loud. We connect the dots beyond the headline and focus on explaining why things matter to the people working in this business.

If you believe industry coverage can exist without clutter and interruption, you can support it here → SUPPORT TSW.

Support is optional. But it directly funds research and continued coverage — and helps prove this model can work.
