Vimeo has carried out another significant round of layoffs, impacting a large share of its global workforce, according to reporting from Business Insider and public posts from former employees.
Multiple Vimeo staff members confirmed on LinkedIn and X that they were affected. Dave Brown, Vimeo’s former vice president of Global Brand & Creative, wrote that he and “a large portion of the company” were laid off following Vimeo’s acquisition by Bending Spoons.
Additional posts from engineers and product staff described the cuts as widespread. One former employee said “almost everyone at Vimeo was laid off,” including what they described as the entire video team. Vimeo hasn’t publicly confirmed the scope of the reductions or which teams were impacted.
Second Workforce Reduction in Recent Months
This marks Vimeo’s second round of layoffs in less than a year. In September, the company reduced its workforce by about 10% as it continued reshaping its business ahead of the acquisition.
Bending Spoons completed its $1.38 billion purchase of Vimeo in 2025, taking the company private after several years as a publicly traded business. Vimeo has positioned itself as a subscription-based video services company focused on professional creators, enterprises, and media organizations rather than mass-market, viral video distribution.
Founded in 2004, Vimeo has historically differentiated itself by emphasizing higher-quality playback, creative tools, and business-oriented video infrastructure.
Ongoing Focus on AI-Driven Video Tools
Prior to the acquisition, Vimeo had been expanding its use of AI-powered features across its product suite. These tools include automated video editing, transcription-based editing, translation and dubbing, and AI-driven search that allows users to locate specific moments within large video libraries.
Vimeo accelerated this strategy after acquiring Magisto in 2019, positioning AI as a way to improve efficiency for business users managing large volumes of video. Company leadership has previously framed these tools as workflow enhancements rather than replacements for professional production teams.
There’s been no formal announcement indicating that Vimeo plans to discontinue or scale back these initiatives.
Bending Spoons Confirms Layoffs
A spokesperson for Bending Spoons confirmed that layoffs were announced at Vimeo on January 20, 2026, but declined to provide additional details, citing employee privacy. The company said it remains committed to growing Vimeo and supporting its user base.
Bending Spoons operates a portfolio of software and digital media businesses and has completed multiple acquisitions across productivity, creator tools, and consumer applications in recent years.
The Streaming Wars Take
Vimeo’s latest workforce reduction reflects the continued restructuring that often follows private ownership transitions in the video and SaaS sectors.
For customers, partners, and enterprise buyers, the focus will be on execution continuity, product stability, and support responsiveness. Vimeo’s positioning as a professional video services company depends less on headline headcount and more on its ability to maintain product momentum and customer trust during this transition.
